Dr. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, Member

Francesc Xavier Pi-Sunyer (Barcelona, 1933), Professor at Columbia University Medical Center, Columbia University’s Institute of Human Nutrition, NY, US. He is an endocrinologist and university lecturer. His research focuses on diabetes, obesity and the control of food intake.

He has worked as a medical director at several hospitals in the United States, particularly St. Luke's Hospital Center, New York, where he has been an endocrinologist since 1965. He has also lectured at Columbia University and led research programmes, including those carried out by the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition in St. Luke's Hospital Center.

Pi-Sunyer is currently director of the Obesity Nutrition Research Center and head of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition at the Hospital St. Luke's-Roosevelt. He is also a lecturer in medicine at Columbia University. He has written over 450 papers and two books on these subjects and has been president of the American Diabetes Association. He has led various studies on obesity for US public health services and acted as a consultant for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the US agency for food and drug safety. Pi-Sunyer has collaborated with the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition and maintains close ties with the Catalan Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Barcelona. He has appeared as a guest speaker at seminars organized by the Hospital Clínic’s Endocrinology and Nutrition Service
